Notable Conferences and Journals for Disciplines Within English

Last Updated: Summer 2015

A huge thank you to Madison Bettle for compiling this preliminary list in conjunction with professors in the department. This list is an ongoing project, so if your discipline is not yet represented yet, please talk to the professors in your field and help us expand this resource!

A note from Dr. Steven Bruhm: Graduate students should not limit themselves to specialist journals if they think they have a big-hitting paper. An essay published in something like Representations, Critical Inquiry, or PMLA is going to have a lot more hit than something published in, for example, Horror Studies. Something for students to keep in mind: Aim High.

A good resource for keeping up to date on conference CFPs is: http://call-for-papers.sas.upenn.edu

  • Modern Drama (traditionally quite text-focused, so a good English/Drama crossover journal)
  • Theatre Research International (very flexible, lots of drama, lots of performance, focus on non-Anglo work)
